We all know moving house can be an extremely stressful experience. So the best thing to do is try to make it as easy as possible on yourself to move by having everything in place beforehand.
Here are our top 10 tips to help you prepare for the move:
Hire someone to look after your children and pets during the move. You don’t need the extra stress of worrying about where they are and if they’re alright. The last thing you need is them getting underfoot!
Start packing non-essential items a couple of weeks before you move. There’s always so much to do that you don’t want to be thinking about extra packing close to your move date when you could’ve sorted it out days or weeks previously.
In addition to changing your postal address, remember to de-register from your doctor, dentist and optician if you’re moving out of the area. Also make sure tthat you notify the bank of any changes to direct debits and standing orders.
List everyone who needs to be informed that you’re moving and send out an email to everyone.
Go into your new home before moving day to check everything out and take some cleaning products with you – it may need a bit of a clean!
Finally, confirm arrangements with your removal company. Confirm arrival times and make sure that they have directions to your new address. Knowing everything is in place will hopefully let you get a good night’s sleep before moving day!
Make your last food shop about two weeks before moving. You don’t want to be unnecessarily transporting food in addition to everything else.
Change your address before moving. You can visit the post office and get them to forward your post to you. There is a charge for this service but it saves you repeatedly returning to your previous address to collect post – an important consideration if you’re moving miles away.
If you are renting, make sure to take photographs of your house when everything is out. Similarly, take pictures of your new place before moving in. This will help with any disputes over a housing deposit.
Pack an overnight bag that has everything you’ll need for the day after you move in. You don’t want to be hunting for deodorant amongst your boxes the next morning.
