How to Store Seasonal Clothes Properly

Swapping your wardrobe with the seasons is one of the easiest ways to create space at home. But storing seasonal clothes properly isn’t just about tidiness – it helps protect fabrics, prevent damage, and keep everything fresh until you need it again.
Whether you’re packing away bulky winter coats or lightweight summer outfits, a few simple steps can make all the difference.
1. Clean everything before storing
Before putting clothes away for the season, make sure they are clean and fully dry. Stains, body oils, and even small marks can set over time and become harder to remove later.
This is especially important for winter coats and knitwear, as well as summer items worn in heat (which may hold odours).
Clean clothes not only last longer, but are also ready to wear straight away next season.
2. Use the right storage for each item
Different fabrics need different approaches.
For winter coats and knitwear, make sure you fold rather than hang to avoid stretching. Store in breathable fabric bags or boxes.
For summer clothing, lightweight fabrics can be folded neatly and stored in drawers, boxes or organisers.
For delicate items, use acid-free tissue paper to prevent creasing.
Avoid storing clothes long term in vacuum bags, particularly natural fibres like wool, as compression can damage their shape.
3. Keep clothes cool, dry and protected
Clothing should always be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Heat, damp and sunlight can cause fading, mildew or fabric deterioration.
Avoid lofts due to the extreme temperature changes. Also, avoid garages or basements due to the risk of damp.
Instead, choose a clean cupboard – or, if space is limited, a secure storage unit where conditions are more stable.
4. Protect against moths and odours
Seasonal clothes – especially wool and cashmere – can attract moths. To keep them protected, use cedar blocks or lavender sachets, and avoid plastic bags that trap moisture. Remember to ensure clothes are clean before storing.
You can also add breathable covers to keep dust away while allowing air circulation.
5. Store smart to save space
Make your storage work harder by grouping items by season or category. You should label boxes clearly and keep frequently used items more accessible.
For smaller homes, under-bed storage or stackable boxes can help maximise space.
Bulky winter coats and out-of-season clothes can quickly take over wardrobes, especially in family homes. Moving them out of your everyday space can make your home feel lighter, more organised and easier to manage.
