5 Top-of-Fridge Storage Ideas: How to Make the Most of the Area Above Your Fridge

11th August 2026

Kitchen with a fridge that has storage above it (some wicker baskets and a cupboard)
The area above the fridge is often one of the most underused storage spaces in the kitchen – whether there’s shelves, a cupboard, or nothing at all there (yet?) and you’re placing items directly on top of the fridge itself.

It can be awkward to reach and difficult to organise, which means it often becomes a dumping ground for random items.

With a little planning, however, this space can become a useful home for things you don’t need every day while helping to keep kitchen worktops and cupboards clutter-free.

Note: this article assumes you have a cupboard as your top-of-fridge storage – but the below advice should still work in most cases, even if you don’t have a cupboard but have something else there instead (e.g. shelves, loose storage baskets, etc.).

1. Store special occasion kitchenware

The area above your fridge is ideal for items that are only used occasionally. Serving platters, gravy boats, cake stands and seasonal tableware can all be stored here without taking up space in your everyday cupboards.

By keeping these items together, they’re easier to find when hosting family gatherings, birthdays or holiday meals.

2. Keep spare food storage containers

If you have more food storage containers than you regularly use, the area above the fridge can be a good place to keep the extras. Storing spare containers, lunchboxes and reusable food wraps here frees up valuable space elsewhere in the kitchen.

Consider using a basket or storage box to keep everything organised and prevent items from becoming untidy.

3. Create a baking supplies zone

Large mixing bowls, cake tins, piping equipment and other baking essentials are perfect candidates for top-of-fridge storage, particularly if you only bake occasionally.

Grouping these items together means you’ll know exactly where everything is the next time you’re making a birthday cake or batch of biscuits.

4. Store seasonal and entertaining items

Many kitchens contain items that are only used seasonally or for just one part of the year. Christmas serving dishes, Easter decorations, picnic accessories and party supplies can all live in the cupboard or area above the fridge until they’re needed.

Keeping them out of the way helps create more space for the items you use every day.

5. Use storage baskets for easy access

Because the cupboard can be difficult to reach, storage baskets are a simple way to make it more practical. Instead of reaching into the back of the cupboard, you can pull out a basket containing similar items and quickly find what you’re looking for.

Labelling baskets can make organisation even easier.

Know when you need more space

Even the most organised kitchen has limited storage. If cupboards are overflowing with seasonal items, rarely used appliances or household belongings, it may be time to look beyond the kitchen for additional space.

At Easystore, our flexible storage options help free up room at home by providing a secure place for the items you want to keep but don’t need every day. That way, your kitchen cupboards can stay organised, practical and easy to use.
