How to Store Old Photos: Preserve the Past While Creating Space

16th January 2026

Old photos and photo film laid out
There’s something special about old photos. Whether it’s childhood holidays in Tenby, family weddings, or memories of loved ones no longer with us, these snapshots of the past deserve proper care. But as boxes pile up in cupboards, lofts, and spare rooms, physical photos can become easily damaged – and they take up valuable space in the home.

If you’re keen to declutter while holding on to your most treasured memories, here’s how to store and preserve your old photos safely and simply.

Declutter before you store

Start by gathering all your loose photos, albums and envelopes from around the house. Spread them out on a clear table and sort them into categories – by year, event or person. As you go, ask yourself if you need the duplicates, if the photos are meaningful enough to keep, or whether other friends and family would be better with them (or at least offered, before you get rid of them entirely).

Letting go of damaged, blurry or duplicate images can instantly reduce the volume and therefore help you focus on what truly matters.

Digitise your favourites

Digitising old photos is a brilliant way to protect them from deterioration while freeing up physical space. You can use a home scanner, use most smartphones, or use a professional scanning service.

Once digitised, create a cloud backup – e.g. Google Photos, iCloud or OneDrive – so that your memories stay safe, even if something happens to the originals. You’ll also have easy access to share them with family, wherever they live.

Store physical photos properly

For the photos you’re keeping, proper storage makes all the difference.

Use acid‑free boxes and sleeves to protect them from fading and yellowing. Think about your house and avoid garages, attics and sheds – anywhere where the temperature and humidity may fluctuate.

Store them flat – not upright – to prevent bending and warping. Also, label boxes clearly, so that you can find special moments quickly when you want to reminisce.
