How to Declutter Your House in One Day

22nd February 2024

Clean desk with calendar
Decluttering your house in one day is possible – and beneficial. By following the below tips, you can transform your house into a clutter-free, organised and comfortable space that reflects your personality and lifestyle.

You can also enjoy the many advantages of living with less, such as saving time, money, and energy, improving your health and well-being, and supporting the environment.

Set your goals and gather supplies

Before you start, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and how you are going to do it. Write down your goals and reasons for decluttering, and keep them in mind throughout the process.

You also need to gather some supplies – such as bin bags, boxes, plastic storage containers, tape and a permanent marker – to store, label or dispose of the items you no longer want in your home and those you may look to store away.

Be focused

Keep track of your time and try to avoid getting overwhelmed. Plan any breaks rather than taking them spontaneously – it’s easy to get distracted.

Have a decent playlist of upbeat music to keep you motivated and energised as well as your food provisions planned to keep you hydrated and nourished.

Stick to your plan

You need to make a plan of how you are going to declutter your house. You can either go room by room or category by category, depending on your preference and the layout of your house.

For example, you can start with the living room, then the kitchen, then the bedroom, and so on – or you can start with clothes, then books, then papers, and so on. Whichever method you choose, make sure you divide your time into small, manageable chunks. E.g. spending 30 minutes to an hour on each area, depending on the size and complexity. Focus on one area at a time and don’t move on until you finish it.

Make it enjoyable

To make your decluttering day more successful and enjoyable, start with the easiest or most visible area to build momentum and confidence.

Take before and after photos to see your progress and celebrate your achievements. You may want to involve your family or friends to make it more fun and less stressful.

Reward yourself with a treat or a break after completing each area or the whole house.

Maintain your decluttered house by following the one-in-one-out rule, decluttering regularly, and buying less and better.
