4 Tips on How to Clean a Messy House

22nd May 2023

A table littered with post-it notes of different colours, some scrumpled up. There's also a laptop, a mug, and a notepad.
Mess in the home is a battle that everyone faces on a regular basis. Whether it’s because you’ve got a young family, burly teenagers, or a busy lifestyle, mess can get out of control if you don’t stay on top of it.

Below are some tips for keeping on top of it if you have a mess problem in your home.

1. Treat each day in isolation

Taking things day by day is a good mantra for most things, especially when it comes to managing a messy house. If you can make sure you don’t leave your home in a mess at the end of each day, you’ll be able to sleep well knowing everything is in order. Stay disciplined – get used to tidying up before you go to bed and get used to waking up to an orderly, unmessy house.

2. Room by room

If your mess is becoming too widespread across the home, take a marginal gains approach and tackle it room by room. However, be sure to take the time to ensure you’re not just moving mess from one room to another. Plan how you’re going to reduce the mess by investing in storage solutions, getting rid of items, or simply making better use of the space you have.

3. Never waste a trip

Effort should never be wasted. If you – like many people – spend time walking around your home and you’re going from room to room, making sure you never waste a trip by taking items with you that may not belong there. A great example of this are children’s toys, which often make their way to parts of the house they shouldn’t be in. If you’re walking from downstairs to upstairs, make use of the trip and take all the items that you can handle with you. This way you’re tidying as you go, and – at the very least – containing mess to the room it lives in. “Never a wasted journey,” as they say.

4. See it as a regular job

Cleaning, recycling, bins, hoovering… All these jobs are regular chores that get taken care of. Make sure you respect your need for tidiness and treat it in the same bracket of those aforementioned jobs. Make sure others who live in your home know it, too – so you’re not fighting a losing battle and you can tackle it as a family or household together.
