7 Tips for Packing for a Summer Holiday With Small Children

12th June 2024

An open suitcase on a floor with kids' stuff strewn about, both in and outside of it: a toy plane, wood train track pieces and a toy train, shoes with a crocodile design, swim shorts, and more.
Embarking on a summer holiday with small children can be an adventure filled with joy – and a few challenges. The key to a smooth trip is packing effectively.

Here’s our top tips to help you pack smart for your family getaway.

1. Start with a list

Begin by creating a detailed packing list. This should include clothing, toiletries, first aid, and entertainment items. Having a list ensures you won’t forget the essentials and helps prevent overpacking.

2. Pack for all weathers

Pack light, comfortable clothing that can be layered. Include hats and sunglasses to protect from the sun, and always have a spare set of clothes handy in your carry-on for those unexpected spills or messes. Even in summer, weather can be unpredictable. Pack a lightweight raincoat and umbrella just in case you encounter a rainy day.

3. Keep everyone safe

A small first aid kit can be a lifesaver. Include plasters, antiseptic wipes, insect repellent, and any prescribed medications. It’s also wise to have children’s pain relief medicine just in case. Obviously, sun cream is a must-have for any summer holiday. Choose a high factor suitable for sensitive skin and remember to reapply regularly. Pack a sunhat and UV-protective swimwear for extra protection.

4. Food and snacks

This should save you a fortune. Pack a variety of healthy snacks that are easy to eat on-the-go. Think about non-perishable items like dried fruit, crackers, and cereal bars. Don’t forget sippy cups or bottles to stay hydrated.

5. Entertainment

Keep children entertained during travel with a mix of their favorite toys, books, and games. Consider downloading movies or apps on a tablet device for electronic entertainment options. Don’t assume you’ll have good quality WiFi. Also, comfort items can help the journey, too – whether it’s a familiar blanket, cuddly toy or a pillow; all can help soothe a child in new environments. These items can be a comforting piece of home while away.

6. Travel documents and airline restrictions

The boring (but very important) stuff. Ensure all travel documents are in order, including passports, travel insurance, and any necessary visas. Keep these in an easily accessible but secure part of your luggage. Before you travel, check your airline’s restrictions on luggage size and weight. This will help you avoid any last-minute stress at the airport.

7. Involve the children

If your children are old enough, involve them in the packing process. Let them choose a few items they’d like to bring along. This can help them feel more invested in the trip and ease any travel anxiety.

We hope the above helps and that you have a great holiday with your family!
