How to Store Duvets & Bedsheets: Tips & Tricks for a Clutter-free Home

14th May 2025

A double bed in a bedroom
As the seasons change, so do our bedding needs. When the warmer weather of summer approaches, many people swap out their thicker duvets and bedsheets for lighter, more breathable options.

But what do you do with those bulky winter bedding items?

Proper storage is key to keeping your home organised and your bedding in good condition. Here are some tips and tricks on how to store duvets and bedsheets effectively…

Vacuum storage bags

One of the most popular and space-saving options for storing duvets and bedsheets is vacuum storage bags. These bags allow you to compress your bedding by removing the air, significantly reducing the amount of space they take up. Simply fold your duvet or bedsheets, place them in the bag, and use a vacuum cleaner to suck out the air. This method not only saves space but also protects your bedding from dust, moisture, and pests.

Storage bins and boxes

Plastic storage bins or boxes with lids are another great option for storing your bedding. They provide a sturdy and protective environment, keeping your duvets and bedsheets safe from dust and pests. Label the bins or boxes with the contents and the season to make it easy to find what you need when the weather changes again.

Under-bed storage

If you’re short on closet space, under-bed storage can be a lifesaver. Use flat storage containers or bags designed to fit under your bed. This is a convenient way to keep your bedding out of sight but easily accessible when you need it. Ottomans and storage benches can be a stylish and functional way to store your bedding, too. These pieces not only provide extra seating but also offer hidden storage space for your duvets and bedsheets.

Wardrobe shelves

If you have extra space in your wardrobe, consider dedicating a shelf or two to your bedding. Use shelf dividers to keep everything organised and prevent your duvets and bedsheets from toppling over.

Clean and dry before storing

Always wash your duvets and bedsheets before storing them. This helps prevent stains from setting in and deters pests. Make sure you dry the bedding properly, too, in order to avoid damp and mould issues. The last thing you want when you get the bedding back out of storage once it gets cold is to rewash it or have to throw it out due to irreparable damage.

Use cedar blocks or lavender sachets

To keep your bedding smelling fresh and deter pests, consider adding cedar blocks or lavender sachets to your storage containers. This will keep a fresh smell within the bedding which will be helped by the cool, dry place you choose to store it. Make sure you keep it away from direct sunlight to prevent damage to your bedding, too.
