4 Storage Tips to Get Your House Ready for Christmas Day

21st December 2023

A home at Christmas
With the big day nearly upon us, this is the time of year that each household goes into overdrive: making sure there’s enough food and drink, all presents are bought, and all family members are seen to.

Below are four top tips on how planning ahead with regards to storage will help get your home in order, giving you that bit more of a relaxing Christmas Day…

1. Declutter key areas of your home

Start by decluttering one room, one space, or even one zone within a room to make it easier. Focus on rooms that will be used the most at Christmas, such as guest bedrooms, which tend to become a bit of a dumping ground during other times of the year. Clear out anything you no longer need or love, and don’t keep things out of guilt. Making more storage room will help with additional gifts and items you may have to store for the short or even long term. If you have decluttered ahead of time, you could make some extra cash from unwanted items on apps like Vinted or Depop.

2. Cleanse kitchen cupboards

A well-stocked pantry is the cornerstone for stress-free cooking at Christmas. To get organised, go through your kitchen cupboards, fridge, and freezer, and get rid of anything you no longer need or can make use of. Herbs and spices, baking supplies, sauces and condiments, special seasonings, cans, jars, and packaged goods are all worth reviewing, so that you can make ample storage room in your kitchen. This is especially useful if you’re hosting over the festive period.

3. Get guest bedroom ready

There’s nothing like the pressure of hosting to get you into gear. If you’re expecting guests, make sure the guest bedroom is clean and tidy of clutter. Use overspill storage areas – such as an attic or garage – to move anything that usually lives in these rooms. A great tip for additional decorations that may be taking up space: add some festive touches like a wreath on the door, a small Christmas tree, or some fairy lights. Don’t forget to raid the airing cupboard for those extra blankets and pillows to ensure your guests are comfortable.

4. Plan your Christmas Day

Planning ahead can help you avoid stress on Christmas Day. Make a list of everything you need to do – including cooking times – and be sure to delegate tasks to other family members. This will help focus the mind on which areas of the house people will be in and what needs to be moved or stored away. An example of this is coats and shoes – if you’re welcoming a bunch of family members, it may be a good idea to remove your coats from the cloakroom or under the stairs to make room for your guests. The last thing you want is a load of coats getting in the way; the same goes for shoes and umbrellas, too.
