4 Storage Ideas for Small Entryways

Whether you have a Victorian house, a high-rise modern apartment,* or a new-build terrace, lots of properties in the UK have small entryways. With most being a high-traffic area, it’s important to ensure it isn’t cluttered, and that people have easy access to and from the property.

Below are four ideas for storage in residential entryways – whether they be small or otherwise.
1. A no-shoe zone
Shoes, shoes, shoes. The absolute worst thing to see when you first open the door (second only to toys, perhaps). Whether you install specific shoe storage, or use a rack that is hidden (possibly under the stairs), the best way to start planning your entryway – if you’re wanting to optimise it for storage – is to declare it a shoe-free zone. Small children: take note.
2. Use height to your advantage
Of course, this will depend on the type of home you have, but use the height of an entryway to build-in specific storage. Whether they are built-in cupboards or free-standing units, make sure you utilise the height of the ceiling to get as much space for your stuff as possible.
One handy tip: make sure you can easily access whatever you decide to store – a fold-away step ladder can be sourced cheaply and stored away with ease.
3. Benches, tables and baskets
The classic option to bring chic to your home’s small entryway: use long benches, side-tables and wicker baskets to store and home your shoes, coats, blankets – whatever you need. Not only is there a huge range of options to choose from here, but the stylish aesthetics can add a lot to your home beyond practical solutions.
4. Think about the door
This may seem like an obvious one, but assess how the door works and what solutions you can find. If a door opens inwards (which is usually the case), you may be able to add a coat rack on the rear of the door. However, if this stops you being able to fully open the door, then this is a non-starter. If there is ample room when the door is open beyond 90 degrees, you may be able to fix a rack to hold items on the rear of the door, which can offer another storage solution to your small entryway.
