How to Store Christmas Lights: Don’t Get in a Tangle This Festive Season

2nd December 2025

Colourful, tangled Christmas lights
The festive season is just around the corner, and nothing sets the mood quite like twinkling Christmas lights. But let’s be honest: when January rolls around, those same lights often end up in a messy knot at the bottom of a box. This year, avoid the stress and make storing your lights simple, sustainable, and tangle-free.

Here are six top tips to keep your Christmas lights in perfect shape for next Christmas.

1. Untangle before you store

It might sound obvious, but taking a few minutes to untangle your lights now will save hours next year. Lay them out on a flat surface, check for broken bulbs, and wipe away any dust. This quick prep ensures they’re ready to shine again without frustration.

2. Wrap them around something sturdy

Instead of stuffing lights into a bag or box, wrap them around a piece of cardboard, an old coat hanger, or even a reusable cable reel. This keeps the wires straight and prevents knots. Bonus tip: cut a notch in the cardboard to secure the plug so that it doesn’t dangle.

3. Use reusable storage solutions

Skip single-use plastic bags and opt for eco-friendly containers. A sturdy storage box or a fabric bag works well and can be reused year after year. Label the box clearly so you know exactly what’s inside – meaning no more rummaging through piles of decorations.

4. Keep lights dry and cool

Moisture and heat can damage the wiring and shorten the lifespan of your lights. Store them in a cool, dry place – like a loft or cupboard – away from direct sunlight. If you’re using outdoor lights, make sure they’re completely dry before packing them away.

5. Recycle or repair where possible

If you find broken bulbs or faulty wiring, don’t throw the whole set away. Many local recycling centres accept electrical items, and some retailers offer take-back schemes. For minor issues, a quick repair can extend the life of your lights and reduce waste.

6. Go digital with your checklist

Create a simple inventory of your decorations on your phone or computer. Note where you’ve stored each item and any repairs needed. This small step helps you stay organised and reduces unnecessary purchases – good for your wallet and the planet.
