5 Fridge Storage Tips for a Fresh Summer

As temperatures rise, so does the pressure on your fridge to keep everything crisp, cool, and safe to eat. Whether you’re prepping for BBQs, storing leftovers from garden parties, or just trying to keep your berries from turning to mush, smart fridge storage is essential.
Here are our top tips to help you make the most of your fridge space this summer – and while we’re mostly talking about keeping the fridge’s contents cool in summer, these tips should help all year round.
1. Know your zones
Your fridge isn’t the same temperature throughout. Use each section wisely:
- Top shelves: best for ready-to-eat items like leftovers, drinks, and herbs.
- Middle shelves: ideal for dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt.
- Bottom shelves: coldest part – perfect for raw meat and fish (always in sealed containers).
- Crisper drawers: designed for fruits and vegetables, but keep them separate to avoid ethylene gas from fruits spoiling your greens.
2. Don’t overpack
Air needs to circulate to keep food evenly chilled. Overloading your fridge can block vents and lead to uneven cooling. If your fridge is bursting at the seams, consider a clear-out or invest in stackable storage bins to maximise vertical space. Follow the “first in, first out” rule. Move older items to the front and place new groceries at the back. This simple habit helps reduce waste and keeps your fridge organised.
3. Use clear containers
Transparent containers help you see what you have at a glance, reducing food waste and fridge rummaging. Label leftovers with dates so you know what needs eating first. Also, avoid using the fridge door for milk or eggs as this is the most exposed part of the fridge. Use it for condiments, juices, and items with natural preservatives.
4. Keep it clean
Summer heat can make spills and smells worse. Wipe down shelves weekly and keep an open box of baking soda inside to absorb odours. A clean fridge is not only more hygienic but also more efficient.
5. Chill before you store
Hot food raises the internal temperature of your fridge, putting other items at risk. Let leftovers cool to room temperature before refrigerating. But don’t leave them out for more than two hours – especially in warm weather. Also, don’t be afraid to use the freezer to solve your fridge storage issues. If you’re heading away or just have too much food, freeze it! Portion out items like berries, herbs (in olive oil), or even leftover wine (for cooking) in ice cube trays.
