Self storage units are a fantastic solution for managing excess belongings, seasonal items, or business inventory. However, to get the most out of your storage space, it’s essential to organise and pack it efficiently.

Here are some tips and tricks to maximise your storage space effectively.

1. Plan ahead

Before you start packing, take some time to plan. Make a list of all the items you intend to store and categorise them. This will help you determine the size of the storage unit you need and how to organise it. Planning ahead can save you time and effort in the long run.

2. Use the same boxes

Using boxes of the same size makes stacking easier and more stable. It also helps in utilising the vertical space in your storage unit more efficiently. Make sure to label each box clearly with its contents and the room it belongs to – this will make it much easier to find items when you need them.

3. Invest in shelving

Shelving units can be a game-changer when it comes to maximizing storage space. By using shelves, you can take advantage of the vertical space in your unit, keeping items off the floor and organised. This is especially useful for smaller items or boxes that you need to access frequently.

4. Disassemble large items

If you have large furniture or equipment, consider disassembling them before storing. This can save a significant amount of space and make it easier to pack your unit. Keep all screws and small parts in labeled bags and tape them to the corresponding furniture pieces to avoid losing them.

5. Vacuum-sealed bags are your friend

For items like clothing, bedding, and other soft goods, vacuum-sealed bags can be a great space-saving solution. These bags compress the items, reducing their volume and protecting them from dust and moisture.

6. Store things you need the most at the front

Think about how often you’ll need to access certain items and store them accordingly. Place items you might need to retrieve frequently near the front of the unit. Seasonal items or things you won’t need for a while can go towards the back.

7. Create a map and take photos

Once your unit is packed, create a map or diagram showing where everything is located. This can be a simple sketch or a detailed inventory list. Having a map will save you time and frustration when you need to find specific items. Take photos of your unit so you don’t have to go there just to know what you have there.

8. Use protective covers

Protect your belongings by using covers for furniture and other large items. This will help prevent dust accumulation and potential damage. For delicate items, consider using bubble wrap or packing paper for extra protection.

9. Maximise vertical space

Don’t forget to use the height of your storage unit to your advantage. Stack boxes and items as high as safely possible, but ensure that heavier items are at the bottom and lighter ones on top. This will help you make the most of the available space.

10. Regularly reassess your storage needs

Periodically check your storage unit to reassess your needs. You might find that some items are no longer necessary, or you could reorganise to create more space. Keeping your storage unit tidy and organised will make it easier to manage over time.
