8 Ways Self Storage Can Help You While You’re Renovating

13th February 2023

When taking on a home improvement project, self storage can do so much to help. Whether you’re thinking of renovating one room or more of a large-scale renovation, a self storage unit can alleviate the pressure and give you that additional breathing space you need when times get stressful (and costly).

Here are eight tips on how self storage can help you during your renovation project…

1. Declutter and assess the situation

Before work starts, declutter your home and get rid of anything you no longer use or want. Even if you decide not to get rid of items, self storage can be your friend. By slimming down your worldly goods, you can focus on the task in-hand and rid yourself of items that take up space. This will help you assess what work you may need and the lengths you need to go to. This may even help you reduce the work you initially planned.

2. Plan your space

With less stuff clogging up your home, you’ll be able to plan your space better. Use your self storage unit to help plan your renovation – whether that be by hosting visual plans, or setting up the unit as a mock-up room. Use it as a spare room without the hassle – it’s yours to use as you wish and to effect.

3. Buy supplies in bulk

If your home renovation is a large project, the supplies you use will take up considerable space. Use your self storage unit to host your materials, which should help you buy in bulk and save money. You will save time, too – especially if you’re able to have it delivered in one order and you can collect what you need as you go along.

4. Use it as an extension of the garage

A clever way to use self storage is as an extension of the home. Whether it’s the garage, loft, or garden shed, your self storage unit can host everything you want out of the way, so that you can use one for the aforementioned rooms effectively.

5. Keep your goods clean

One of the biggest drawbacks to having work on in the house is the mess and its impact on your items in the home. Use your self storage unit to keep your precious items clean and free from mess – even if it’s large items such as your sofa, television and beds.

6. Take the stress out of home renovations

Having an extension of the home free from mess and the pain of renovation will take a huge deal of stress out of the situation. Ideally, you would live elsewhere whilst renovations take place – but for most people, this isn’t feasible. Use your second garage/loft/garden shed as your tranquil space away from the chaos and overspill area free from dust.

7. Take your time getting it right

There’s no rush to empty your self storage unit back into your newly renovated home. Take time to get your home right and clean from the effects of renovations. Dust springs up for a long time after – trust us! Use this time to try different configurations, to decorate, or to just get a feel of the new space.

8. Use it or lose it

A great way to close the chapter of using self storage to help your renovation is by only reintroducing what you really need back into the home. If there is something that is still in the self storage unit that you don’t need any more – or if it doesn’t quite work in your newly renovated home, then maybe it’s time to say goodbye or even sell it.
