How to Maximise Food Consumption & Reduce Waste

30th April 2020

As we continue to experience lockdown in the UK and across most of the world due to COVID-19, the way we use food has had to change and adapt due to pressures on supply chains as well as physical distancing in supermarkets and other food outlets.

Here are some tips to ensure you have minimal food waste, even if it does go into the compost pile!

1. Do a stock list

Before you place a large food order, make sure that you do a thorough stock check on all items you have in your fridge, freezer and cupboards. You may be surprised by what you find and may be able to put together meals with what you currently have. Be mindful of how long items can last and don’t rush to purchase things you may not need.

2. Plan your meals

Again, before you place food orders, be sure to plan out your meals for the week. This will help you minimise waste and be clear around what you need to purchase. Make sure you plan lunches and breakfast, as well as evening meals.

3. Use your freezer wisely

The freezer is a great way of stocking food but ensure yours is optimised with no random items taking up precious space. The freezer is a great place to forget about food, but in these uncertain times, it is sensible to make sure you have all the space you need. Take the packaging away and recycle it if it is taking too much space, but don’t forget to take a quick photo of the cooking guidelines if required.

4. Google is your friend

As with nearly all things in life, Google is your friend. If you have a number of food items and aren’t sure what to do with them, search online for recipes. You’ll be impressed with what you may find and now is a great time to be adventurous. You never know, you may exit lockdown with a new favourite dish!
